It may demand payment, a call to fraudulent support, remote access, a software installation, credentials, or financial information.

Scareware often imitates an operating-system message, security product, diagnostic scan, or known organization and adds urgency through alarms, countdowns, repeated pop-ups, or claims that controls are disabled. It may be an installed program, but a web page, notification, advertisement, or message can create the deception without infecting the device.
